starting next week to boost patrols in high crime areas and help with traffic enforcement. the same deployment is planned in stockton. a woman was beaten to disin castro valley. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san leandro where sheriff's deputies will hold a press conference later this morning. cate, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. yes, sheriff's deputies expected to be here at 10:00 this morning at the eden township substation. we are hoping to learn more details about the case and the identity of the suspect. if you remember last week, the alameda county fire department got a call about a house fire on the 2400 block of san carlos avenue in castro challengely. as firefighters were trying to stop the flames they found the body of a woman inside. investigator later found out her death and the fire were suspicious. authorities said they believe the woman was brutally beaten by a man who may have got in

through an unlocked door. police had been investigating it as a homicide. one officer says that this is the most violent one he has seen. the victim was a 58-year-old woman living with her partner a former san francisco firefighter. we are hoping to learn these suspects identity and more details around the case in a few hours. live in san leandro, cate caugiran, cbs 5. another turn of events regarding pg&e and how much it will have to pay for fines for the deadly pipeline disaster in san bruno. former u.s. senator george mitchell has offered to withdraw as a mediator for those negotiations. consumer advocates and some officials denounced the public utilities commission for the decision to high mitchell and his law firm saying the firm has a conflict of interest because their clients are an insurance firm for pg&e. anne makovec is at at&t

park where the san francisco giants took game two in a pitcher's duel. this is exciting. >> reporter: they may just sweep this thing in detroit. they are headed there right now. one of the star players of last night's game was certainly madison bumgarner of the he was brilliant. a post-season high 8 strikeouts allowing just two hits threw 7 shutout innings still no score. 7th inning basis loaded for brandon crawford who hit a grounder to infante who decided not to come home instead getting the double play. giants lead 1-0. bottom of the 8th. flyball to right deep enough to score angel pagan to make it 2- 0. >> can you describe what hunter brought to this team emotionally? a lot has been written. but can you give a sense of what he added, i don't think we have enough time for that. he's, you know, i hope he's here for a long time. >> i don't think they are

guest of the team. he was beaten outside dodger stadium on opening day of last season. he suffered serious brain injuries. a little giants drama for a fan who ended up with pablo sandoval's home run ball. dawn fell over the fence in the bleacher section to get the ball. she ended up on a walkway with the ball and tried to sneak it back to her seat. security stopped her and they took the ball back. >> i reached down i picked up the ball, you know, and i go -- and the crowd goes crazy. >> all the balls hit into that area are recovered by the giants staff. that's who has the ball right now. >> well, security then cited price for trespassing. the d.a. will decide whether to prosecute her. she says she would have given the ball back to panda anyway. so much to do about nothing. show us your orange and black spirit. send us your giants fan photos

animals. this is a really neat place to come. i think the weather is going to be great. a lot of neat creatures, a python, a beautiful snake. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. the weather is fantastic. we are talking about a lot of sunshine. it's clear and cold to start around most of the bay area. 40s and some 50s right now so high pressure taking over temperatures warming up nicely. in fact, a the lot of numbers in the 70s in the valleys, 60s at the coast and warmer weather for the weekend. we'll talk more about that and about this wonderful snake here coming up in a little bit. does that make you feel creepy crawly elizabeth? >> you would think that i would be afraid of snakes and i'm not. snakes and spiders, we're friends. i'm okay with them. thanks, lawrence. let's go out the san mateo bridge because you will find some -- well, you have some roadwork in

the eastbound lanes of 92. it looks like it's just eastbound from foster city boulevard out towards the toll plaza. but look at that camera. it's so early and traffic is so light it isn't causing much of a delay up the high-rise and heading into hayward. westbound 92 by the way is fine, as well. in the commute direction. so we just checked in with caltrans and apparently the reopened the ramp a little ahead of schedule. that ramp is reopened from westbound 37 to southbound 101. it was set until about 6:00 this morning for ongoing roadwork in the area. you know it if commute that area but right now everything is open and goes all the way towards the golden gate bridge. there is some roadwork in southbound 101 various lanes blocked from the waldo tunnel through the waldo grade but as you can see traffic again still light into the san francisco. they reopened more southbound 101 lanes. they had the lane change trucks out there about 10 minutes ago so everything is free and clear all the way down towards doyle drive. mass transit always a great option maybe on a friday. we have critical mass by the

way in san francisco later on this evening. so you may want to consider mass transit and so far everything is off to a nice start for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. back to you guys. folks on the east coast are preparing for what some forecasters are calling a "frankenstorm." a combination of arctic air, winter storm and hurricane. hurricane sandy is blamed for more than 20 deaths in cuba, haiti and jamaica. forecasters say the combined monster storm will have an impact from coastal carolina to maine as far inland as ohio. for now hurricane sandy is having an effect on much of south florida. rescue crews are warning people to like to brave the waves. >> we are hoping to discourage surfers from going in. really severe rip currents. >> forecasters say much of the u.s. east coast will likely

experience gale-force winds, heavy rains, flooding and perhaps even snow between sunday and wednesday. all right michelle. it is 5:09. in the race for the presidency republican challenger mitt romney will campaign today in the battleground state of iowa while president obama is back at the white house where his schedule includes several media interviews there. yesterday the president ended a 40-hour tour of battleground states that included his hometown of chicago. he cast an early ballot there for the upcoming election. >> for all of how have not yet voted early, i just wanted everybody to see what an incredibly efficient process this was. >> on november 6 i'm counting on ohio to vote for big change. >> as for governor romney he spent yesterday in ohio a state rich in electoral votes. polls show he trails the president in the buckeye state but is within striking range there. no republican by the way has ever won the white house without winning ohio. that's why he will be there a lot the next week and a half.

this presidential campaign has passed the $2 billion mark when it comes to fundraising. fundraising reports submitted last night show president obama and mitt romney have brought in about $1.7 billion so far. in addition, there's about $300 million in donations involving so-called super packs and tens of millions more are going to nonprofit groups that don't have to disclose their donors. 5:10. coming up, bad news for apple investors. it's a big day for microsoft. which tech company will finish the week a winner? >> plus, is it or isn't it? what we're now learning about that rock that was found in a nevada woman's backyard. >> and this gives new meaning to the term, lunch break. what happened when a deer crashed into the mississippi office building. ,,,,

mississippi business and fod his way to the break room...where employees lockd him in. the 80 pound deer knocked over tables and chai a deer crash through a window in a mississippi business and found his way into the break room where employees lock him in. it knock over tables, chairs and leaped on the cabinet. he wanted out. a few cuts, bruises but eventually that little guy settled down and they got him out. >> poor guy. he was trying to get out. >> he probably had no idea where he was. >> it's been deers gone wild. we have one trying to get into a health club. >> i know.

>> one attacking a restaurant. >> what's going on? i don't know. >> i like frank's line. deers gone wild. i was going to say i think you have tossed to that story before me in the past in the last several weeks. thanks. let's go live to the bay bridge toll plaza. it is "friday light" this morning. it looks great. pretty much everywhere you go, there are some areas of roadwork but not too much. and as you can see, this is easy breezy heading into san francisco. no roadwork at all across the upper deck heading into san francisco. on the maps we'll show you where you may find a couple of brake lights. improvement on the eastbound lanes of 84 crossing the dumbarton bridge. again, it's just so early, typically we see lighter traffic conditions on friday anyway so things actually look knock both directions. westbound 580 through the altamont pass, we're just now starting to see a little bit of changing color on our sensors meaning some of those speeds

the yellow ones are now below 40 miles per hour. drive time 15 minutes to the dublin interchange. we have cameras everywhere this morning. if you are coming down the peninsula right past candlestick all the way towards sfo, traffic is moving fine all along 101, 280 is moving fine as well all the way down through san mateo county. and back out towards the east bay this is a live look at the nimitz. so the oakland coliseum is somewhere there in the distance and taillights are northbound traffic towards downtown oakland. southbound 880 is fine if you have an early-morning flight out of oakland airport and continues to move well past that towards hayward. here's one more live look, a look at the golden gate bridge where they reopened more southbound 101 lanes doyle drive from san francisco now free and clear both directions. that's a check of your opinion "timesaver traffic." with lawrence so far this morning live at the oakland zoo

we have seen snakes, alligator. you got anything cute and furry like a bunny? >> a cute snake. no, nothing like a bunny. we are joined with a couple of guests. sarah is one of the managers at the oakland zoo. what's your snake's name? >> this is nuba and he is a ball python. >> reporter: and how old is he? >> you know, i'll be honest, i cannot remember the birthdays of every animal in the zoo but he is a full grown adult ball python. >> reporter: and he's pretty calm right now but it's pretty cold outside. >> he is. reptiles are cold-blooded so when the weather is chilly like this morning, they move slower. i was keeping him warm inside my jacket a little earlier. >> reporter: yeah. he has a special little heating pad. >> it's important for us to make sure our animals are cared for providing the right temperature whether it's hot or cold. >> reporter: there is a special

event this weekend boo at the zoo. >> it's one of my favorite events at the zoo all year. everybody comes in costumes, kids, adults, everyone. and if you are under age 12 in costume you get a free rides ticket. >> reporter: if you are over age 12? >> if you over age 12 you get to wear you awesome costume at the zoo, it's super fun! >> reporter: there are lots of activities. there are rides, there is a costume parade. >> we have the costume parade, a magician in the wildlife theater, a table where you can make treats for the animals and you can trick or treat throughout the zoo. >> reporter: there are so many different animals here. the weather looks like it will cooperate. >> that's what i hear. >> a lot of temperatures warming up. so chilly to start this morning but i think the temperatures will work out nicely. starting out in the 40s and 50s. so it's a chilly start in many spots especially in the north bay valleys mid-50s there. but through the day we'll see plenty of sunshine and some very nice temperatures toward the afternoon. we'll be warming up as high pressure builds in overhead so

that ridge will continue to build in not only today but right through the weekend and the temperatures are going to soar. looks like if you are heading around the state not a bad day to travel. up in the high country they have seen lots of snow over 3 feet of snow in some of the mountaintops there so if you want to go check out the early snow this year you can do that. i think the the roads will be wide open. in the south bay temperatures in the 60s and a few 70s. i think as you make your way toward the east bay you will see some of the warmest temperatures. mid-70s and upper 70s in the hottest spots. inside the bay, a lot of sunshine all day long. and some very comfortable weather, too. lots of 60s showing up there. so toward the next seven days, some changes in the weather. i think the weekend looking great likely going to see some low 80s in the warmest spots inland and then we'll cool down on tuesday. some spooky looking clouds begin to roll in toward wednesday which is halloween. and there's a chance we could see some showers. then we dry out after that. if you want though check out boo at the zoo, you're more

than welcome to do it this weekend. that's the latest back to you. a murder on the upper west side of manhattan in new york city. police say a nanny killed a 2- year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl in her care before stabbing herself. the nanny is in critical can. the mother discovered them in the bathroom after coming home with her third child. >> those wounds are self- inflicted from the kitchen knife found on the bathroom room in. >> the apartment was lively and full of activity and the mother kept a loving blog of her children full of happy photos. police are trying to establish a motive. more names of johns will be made public today in the prostitution case in maine. police say a zumba dance instructor used her studio as a front for prostitution. the instructor and her business partner pleaded not guilty. 21 names of alleged customers were released just two weeks

ago. apple shares took a hit after the latest profit report fell short of expectations. cupertino-based company said profits were up 24% but for the second straight quarter, that was less than expected. wow. apple says there is strong demand for the product but the supply is limited. its stock fell 1% after that report. and here's proof. apple is already having trouble meeting the demand for the new ipad mini. it started taking preorders this morning and within 20 minutes, there was a two-week backlog for the white model. meanwhile microsoft launches its windows 8 system. that will happen today. they will start selling its new tablet called surface. first it was a meteorite then it was just a plain old rock. and now nasa is having another change of heart. they are taking a closer look at the golf ball-sized space rock found in the yard of a novato home and they believe it is a piece from this weekend's meteor shower.

death of a castro valley woman this morning. her body was found inside a burned-out home. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san leandro right now where sheriff's deputies will releasing more details in a few hours. cate. >> reporter: michelle, yes. they have not released the name of the suspect. yesterday they came out with the information saying hey, an arrest was made but we are hoping to get more details at the eden township substation. last week firefighters found a body of a woman inside. investigators believe an accelerant was used to start the fire and the suspect beat the woman after slipping through an unlocked door. they believe the fire was set to cover up the attack and the robbery at the home. now, the victim was identified as 58-year-old barbara [ indiscernible ] a retired woman who lived at the home on the 2400 block of san carlos with her long-time partner a retired san francisco firefighter. he is not considered a suspect

in this case. now, police have been investigating the case as a homicide. one deputy even said this is the most violent case that he has ever seen. now, again, we are hoping to get more details. that press conference is scheduled for 10:00 this morning. live in san leandro, cate caugiran, cbs 5. 5:31. a man accused of kidnapping a 9- year-old girl from her san mateo school is now facing charges in another case. police say 25-year-old bradley morosic may be the suspect in a daly city peeping incident. they accused him of hiding in a restroom stall taking note coast of young girls. mrozek is in jail from last month. a 6-year-old boy is safe with his mother after he disappeared from his hayward school. krystal says her son kay len who has autism was attending an after-school program at south gate elementary school. when she arrived to pick him up

yesterday wants there. >> the police was not called until they realize he was missing. >> several police officers and volunteered searched but a half hour later she got a call from a chuck e. cheese restaurant more than a mile and a half away. the manager spotted the number on the boy's medical id bracelet. school district officials are investigating how he got away. 5:32. demonstrators have returned to the site of last year's "occupy oakland" protest. some 200 people marching through downtown oakland. protestors occasionally blocked traffic but the night was largely peaceful. they came one year after police tore down the tent city at frank ogawa plaza. last night police followed the marchers and gave warnings through a loudspeaker. just two arrests were reported. the chp will begin patrolling the streets of oakland to help the stretched police department there. officers will be deployed starting next week to boost patrols in high crime areas and

help the traffic enforcement. a similar deployment is planned for the city of stockton. time now 5:33 how about the giants? they are heading to detroit with hopes of sweeping the world series. >> they might do it too. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec at at&t park where the giants won a pitcher's duel in game 2. it was a nail-biter until the 7th. >> reporter: pretty exciting two wins down, two wins to go. they may end up sweeping this thing in detroit. one of the most talked about plays of the game last night. prince fielder on first delmon young hits one by a diving panda at third. the ball then bounces off the wall and third base coach gene lamont decides to send fielder to the plate. but the relay from marco scutaro, fielder is out. the game stays scoreless until the 7th with the bases loaded until brandon crawford grounds into a double play hunter pence scoring to give the giants i 1- 0 lead. they added another run in the 8th and win 2-0 to take the series lead. bumgarner strikes out 8 without

allowing a run. the giants now headed to detroit feeling solid. >> did feel different for you out there last night compared to the last two? >> yeah. i went into the 7th inning instead of getting taken out in the 3rd. [ laughter ] >> were you surprised they sent prince on the second? what was your view? >> it hit off the wall. i thought he would score to be honest the way he caromed off the wall. it took a perfect relay to get it done. >> reporter: previously 52 teams in a world series history have taken a 2-0 series lead and 41 times the teams with the 2-0 series lead have gone on to win the world series. so the next game is going to be played saturday night in detroit and frank and michelle i think the big question on a lot of fans' minds right now is would you rather see them sweep the series or rather see them return here to at&t park?

cbsmoneywatch.com joins us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. happy flied, everyone. asian markets edged lower. tokyo's nikkei lost more than 1.3% and hong kong's hang seng dropped more than 1%. a day of modest gains on wall street as disappointing earnings weighed heavily on investors. the dow rose 26 points at the close of third place trading while the nasdaq gained four points. stock futures are falling this morning despite better-than- expected news on the economy. the economy grew 2% in the 3rd quarter. mostly due to higher consumer and government spending as well as home construction. that is up from 1.3% in the 2nd quarter. bad news for apple investors. the tech company missed expectations for the second consecutive quarter. apple sold nearly 27 million iphones in the quarter. that was at the high and of expectations. the company also sold 14 million ipads slightly less than expected. and apple is warning of an expected dip in 4th quarter earnings predicting 1175 per

share nearly $4 short of analyst estimates. the company is blaming the cost of producing new gadgets for the reduction in profits. and it is a big day for microsoft. the company releases its latest version of its software today. they say windows 8 is the most dramatic overhaul of the operating system in 17 years designed to run on pcs, tablets and smartphones also today microsoft beginning to sell its own tablet computer called surface. i always wonder how did they come up with that name? surface? >> it's catchy. >> i bet there's 50 people in the room going try this. yo. mcdonald's will start selling the 12-ounce bags of coffee for $7 at nearly 1400 stores. it will test it out in canada

the oakland a's to the city. the mercury news says mayor chuck reed has back now at 5:53. san jose officials are still moving forward in an effort to bring the oakland as to their city. the "mercury news" says that the mayor chuck reed has been meeting with santa clara supervisors to make sure no land dispute get in the way of the effort but it's the giants who remain the big obstacle. that team owner claims the territorial rights to san jose and want to prevent the as from building that downtown ballpark. so stay tuned. workers meanwhile appear to be making great progress on the new 49ers stadium. this is a live look at the
